West Ham United supporters’ club Sydney Hammers is hoping to end the season with a piece of silverware at the Football Fans Downunder (FFDU) Awards.
The group, which is one of the largest and most active West Ham fan clubs in the world with more than 600 members, has been nominated for the Supporters Club of the Year award alongside Australia Spurs and Sydney FC’s The Cove.
If that was not impressive enough, the Sydney Hammers were also nominated in the Best Supporters’ Club Event category for their staging of the Dylan Tombides Cup – a charity football match held in memory of the late West Ham and Australia U23 striker and in aid of the DT38 Foundation.
The club, which meets regularly at The Royal Exhibition Hotel in the city’s Surry Hills suburb, was also nominated in the Best Use of social Media category.
However, Sydney Hammers have only been shortlisted in the final three for the Supporters Club of the Year award.
In anticipation of Friday’s FFDU Awards, Sydney Hammers tweeted ‘@NUFC v @whufc_official is the second-most important contest this weekend, as we are shortlisted for @FFDU Supporters’ Club of the year Friday night!”
As a further illustration of West Ham’s growing presence in Australia, The Pig ‘n’ Whistle Riverside pub in Brisbane, home to the Brisbane Hammers supporters’ club, has also been nominated in the Football Bar of the Year category.
