West Ham United versus Chelsea come around again, as it does every year we are in the Premier League!
I was lucky enough to play for two really good clubs and in some really good teams, winning the league with Chelsea in 1955 and the FA Cup in 1964, so I have great memories of both.
Most people won’t remember, but we had a very good side back then at Chelsea, just as they have now. We used to get 70,000 in standing up on the terracing, which was a massive crowd and they enjoyed watching us win the league.
I’ve always cherished those memories, as I have those of winning the FA Cup and playing in the Cup Winners’ Cup for West Ham.
If I had to pick one moment at the Boleyn Ground as my favourite, it was beating the great Leeds United 7-0 on a Monday night in November 1966. They were top and winning everything and we were unbelievably good and they couldn’t get the ball off us.
Overall, I was a winger and I played in front of the Chicken Run and they were unbelievably funny, and I loved a laugh and a joke with them!
I had been at Chelsea with Ron Greenwood, who managed us throughout the 1960s, and I played with him there before playing under him here. He was a good coach and had a wonderful football philosophy. He believed in passing the ball, trying tricks and making the crowd happy, as well.
I also know our current manager Slaven Bilic very well, having collected him and his wife from Heathrow Airport when Harry Redknapp signed him in 1996!
When I collected him, he knew who I was and what I had done. He’s not only a good manager, but he is bright as a button.
I watch the training under Slaven and it’s similar to under Ron, based on passing and moving, and his belief in how we should play. It’s a great show and I hope it goes really well for him.
