Tony Cottee and Frank McAvennie fired West Ham United to a 2-1 Division One victory over Tottenham Hotspur in March 1986
Tony Cottee and Frank McAvennie were both on target as West Ham United’s Boys of ’86 scored a fine 2-1 Division One victory over local rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
Cottee raced clear to give the Hammers the lead with his 20th goal of the season before Ossie Ardiles levelled for the visitors at the Boleyn Ground.
However, John Lyall’s title-chasers were not to be denied as Frank McAvennie forced the ball home from close-range after Cottee and Tony Gale had been denied by Spurs goalkeeper Ray Clemence.
All the goals came in the first half, but McAvennie came within a few inches of making it 3-1 after the break when he latched onto Cottee’s through ball and saw his lob come back off the crossbar.
West Ham went on to record a record-high finish of third in the top flight, with strike partners Cottee and McAvennie combining to score 46 league goals between them.
