Ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash against Manchester United at Old Trafford, whufc.com counts down five of the best strikes away from home against the Red Devils.
First, we looked back to 2001 and Paolo Di Canio’s FA Cup winner against Sir Alex Ferguson’s side in January. As the United defence stood waiting for an offside flag which never came, the Italian had no hesitation in putting the ball in the back of the net to seal a famous win in the north west.
Sir Trevor Brooking was on form in 1971, slamming an accurate left-footed attempt past floundering United keeper Alex Stepney, though the goal did come in a 4-2 defeat for the Hammers.
Next up, Carlos Tevez scored one of the Hammers’ most important goals ever, latching onto Bobby Zamora’s lay-off in 2007 to score the game’s only goal and in turn keep Alan Curbishley’s side in the Premier League at the expense of Sheffield United.
Then, casting our mind back to just last season, Dimitri Payet scored one of the greatest free-kicks Old Trafford has ever witnessed, curling in from all of 30 yards to beat David De Gea and put the visitors in front in an FA Cup tie.
To top off the Old Trafford strikes was Dean Ashton, however, who bagged an acrobatic attempt back in 2008, watching a Wes Brown header all the way onto his right boot to overhead kick past Edwin Van Der Sar.
