Thursday night was mostly about winning for West Ham United’s quartet of international representatives.
At senior level, Jose Fonte started as Portugal maintained their strong challenge in 2018 FIFA World Cup UEFA qualifying Group B with a 5-1 victory over the Faroe Islands in Porto.
Hammers centre-half Fonte was honoured before kick-off with a special plaque for reaching 25 caps for his country, as were midfielders Joao Mario and Andre Gomes.
When the match kicked-off, Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick for the European champions, who were given a scare by their Scandinavian rivals.
However, Portugal’s win was not enough to take them top of the group, as Switzerland made it seven wins out of seven with a 3-0 victory over Andorra in St Gallen.
There, West Ham’s Edimilson Fernandes was introduced a 74th-minute substitute to earn third senior cap.
Switzerland remain top of Group B with 21 points, with Portugal second on 18. The group winners will qualify automatically for Russia 2018, with the runners-up almost certain to contest a two-legged play-off to join them.
The pair return to action on Sunday, when Switzerland travel to Latvia and Portugal head for Hungary.
Elsewhere, Nathan Trott made his England U20 debut in a 3-0 friendly victory over the Netherlands in Telford.
The goalkeeper started and watched the Young Lions produce a dominant performance at the Bucks Head, where England even had the luxury of missing a late penalty as they secured a comfortable win.
Trott and his fellow Young Lions head for Switzerland for a second friendly in Winterthur on Monday afternoon.
The only one of the quartet of Hammers to end Thursday on the losing side was Domingos Quina, whose Portugal U20s were beaten 3-0 by the Czech Republic in a friendly international in Abrantes.
Quina and his teammates will have a chance to bounce back when they travel to Rijnsburg to take on the Netherlands on Saturday afternoon.
Elsewhere, England manager Gareth Southgate confirmed that Hammers stopper Joe Hart will be in goal when the Three Lions take on Malta in Ta'Qali in a World Cup UEFA Group F qualifier on Friday evening.
