Team news: Bilic makes nine changes for Carabao Cup tie

Slaven Bilic has shuffled his pack for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup fourth-round tie with Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley Stadium.

The West Ham United manager has made no fewer than nine changes to the XI which started last Friday’s 3-0 Premier League defeat by Brighton & Hove Albion at London Stadium, with only Cheikhou Kouyate and Manuel Lanzini keeping their places.

Alongside them, in come Adrian, Sam Byram, Angelo Ogbonna, Declan Rice, Aaron Cresswell, Mark Noble, Edimilson Fernandes, Andre Ayew and Andy Carroll.

Michail Antonio (ribs), James Collins (ankle) and Diafra Sakho (back) are injured, while Pablo Zabaleta and Winston Reid are both rested.

Of West Ham’s starting XI, Cresswell, Noble, Carroll and Ayew have all played at Wembley previously.

The left-back made his England debut against Spain at the Home of Football in November 2016, while captain Noble featured in wins for England U21 over Portugal in 2008 and West Ham’s Championship Play-Off final victory over Blackpool four years later.

Carroll has played at Wembley more times than any other West Ham starter, making his England debut in a friendly defat by France in November 2010, before scoring in a 1-1 draw with Ayew’s Ghana in March 2011.

He has since appeared twice more for England, started Liverpool’s 2012 League Cup final win over Cardiff City, scored the winner in the Reds’ FA Cup semi-final win over Everton six weeks later and netted again after appearing as a substitute in the final defeat by Chelsea.

Substitute Joe Hart, of course, has featured more times at Wembley than any current West Ham player, with 39 appearances at the National Stadium, including 36 England caps, one England U21 cap, Manchester City’s 2011 FA Cup final win over Stoke City and 2013 defeat by Wigan Athletic in the final of the same competition.

There is speculation that the Hammers will line up in a 5-4-1 diamond formation, with Byram and Cresswell in the wing-back positions and, from right to left, Rice, Kouyate and Ogbonna filling the three centre-half positions. Noble would anchor the midfield, with Fernandes right, Ayew left and No10 Lanzini in the attacking midfield position behind lone centre forward Carroll.

If this is not the case, either Kouyate or Rice could push into midfield, while Ayew could line up alongside Carroll in attack. We will know at 8pm!

The substitutes’ bench will be filled by Hart, Jose Fonte, Arthur Masuaku, Pedro Obiang, Sead Haksabanovic, Marko Arnautovic and Chicharito.
