Jane Ross admits her first competitive goal for West Ham United women couldn’t have been much better, but says she takes more joy in the 4-1 win over Lewes FC Women.
The Scottish international netted an excellent strike from distance to level the tie for Matt Beard’s team at Rush Green on Sunday, after the Irons went behind in the eighth minute.
Ross would also score West Ham’s final goal of the 4-1 victory – after Leanne Kiernan and Julia Simic struck – as the No9 converted from the penalty spot four minutes into the second half.
It probably couldn’t have been a much better goal for me to open my account with, to be honest!

“I think it’s great to get a win in our first home game of the season,” Ross told whufc.com. “It was a fun game and a fun occasion. It would have been nice if the rain had stopped, but it gave a bit of zip to the grass!
“It probably couldn’t have been a much better goal for me to open my account with, to be honest! But, for me, the win for the team is more important, although it’s always nice to score goals too!”
Despite going a goal behind, the attacker feels West Ham were in control of the game throughout the match, and worked hard to take the lead into the second half.
She continued: “Lewes took the lead but I feel like we controlled the game for the 90 minutes. We’re disappointed we conceded the goal but our reaction to going a goal behind was brilliant.
“We all pulled together and it was great to come in at half-time three goals ahead. Obviously then we got the penalty, and scored that in the second half, and got the right result.”
Having picked up a first win of the season, Ross is happy with how the team responded after being defeated at Arsenal last week, and feels there is further progress the team can make ahead of the next match in three weeks’ time.
“We’re only seven weeks into being together as a team,” Ross added. “We analysed the Arsenal game together and looked at certain aspects that we wanted to work on, and little things that we wanted to tweak a bit.
“There was progress again today in certain areas we’ve worked on this week, which is promising to see.”
