Becky Spencer has highlighted West Ham United Ladies’ vision and aspirations for the future as a key aspect of her decision to join the side.
Spencer has become the first new player to make the sign with the Irons following the club’s move into the FA Women’s Super League, with the goalkeeper joining the team from Chelsea F.C. Women.
The shot-stopper is ready to test herself in a new environment and is convinced West Ham is the right place for the next step of her career under the guidance of new head coach Matt Beard and general manager Karen Ray.
“After I left Chelsea I needed a new challenge, and West Ham seemed a really inviting opportunity for me,” Spencer told West Ham TV. “I like the thought and feeling and starting something fresh, and being the part of a journey from the start.
“The vision and aspiration at West Ham is great and is something I really want to be a part of. I’ve had conversations with both Karen and Matt. The head coach is a massive part of your career and Matt coming to West Ham was really refreshing for me.
“I know that he’s a winner and what he’s done previously. He’s someone different and he’s going to be very honest with me.”
At 27-years-old, Spencer believes the Hammers are bringing in a goalkeeper who is heading into the best years of her career, and is eager to bring her best to the West Ham Ladies.

She continued: “I’ve come off the back end of a good year with the goals I set myself last season. I played a few games, although not as many as I’d like, and I feel in the last year I’ve taken a big step in the right direction in terms of what my body needs.
“Hopefully if I keep treating my body in the right way on and off the pitch, then I know I can prolong my career for as long as possible. Within the next three years I think I’ll be at my peak. I see this is a step in the right direction.”
Spencer is now looking forward to the 2018/19 campaign, West Ham Ladies’ first in the FA Women’s Super League as professional footballers, and is ready to show supporters what she can offer between the sticks.
Spencer added: “I hope to settle in nicely, play as many games as I can, and help the team to achieve our targets. I want to enjoy it as well. A big part of it is to come to a club where you’re wanted, and everyone at West Ham has made me feel that so far.
“I just want to be in a good environment and I hope, this season, we can all enjoy the challenge and push on to start achieving things.”
