West Ham United gave Sir Trevor Brooking the perfect 70th birthday present by defeating Manchester United 3-1 at London Stadium on Saturday.
Sir Trevor, who celebrated the milestone on Tuesday, was present to watch Manuel Pellegrini’s men defeat the Red Devils and extend their unbeaten run to a fourth game.
Before the match, Sir Trevor was invited pitchside, where he was presented with a special Hammers shirt to mark the occasion.
He also paid tribute to his former teammate Ronnie Boyce, who will be honoured with the Club’s Lifetime Achievement Award at May’s Player Awards night, brought to you by Betway in aid of the Academy.
He said: “I played with Ron, and he played over 300 games during his time at the Club. He’s an East Ham lad and his nickname was ‘Ticker’ because he kept everything moving.
Earlier this year, Sir Trevor was named at No3 in the #50GreatestHammers countdown - hear about some of his best memories in Claret & Blue here
“We all think of Bobby, Geoff and Martin at that stage, but they all gave Ron a lot of credit for his midfield passing.
“I remember the 1964 FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United, and I remember watching it on TV because I was away with a schoolboy group.
"Man Utd in those days were Charlton, Law, Best so everyone expected we’d lose, but we won 3-1 at Hillsbrough and Ronnie Boyce got two goals.
“Then in the final against Preston it was two apiece late on, and Peter Brabrook crossed for Boycie to score the winner.
“He didn’t score a lot of goals, so to score two in the semis and one in the final was fantastic. Of course that got us into the European Cup Winners’ Cup the following year, which we won at Wembley. Two great years for Boycie and three memorable goals."
