Loan watch: Six Hammers in action at the weekend

Edimilson Fernandes in action for Fiorentina against Cagliari

Six of West Ham United’s on-loan players were in action for their respective clubs over the weekend, with varied results.

Edimilson Fernandes started and played the full 90 minutes as Fiorentina were held 1-1 by Cagliari in Italy’s Serie A.

The 22-year-old Swiss midfielder was one of Fiorentina’s standout performers at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, where Jordan Veretout’s penalty put La Viola in front on the hour-mark.

However, Fiorentina lost their perfect home record nine minutes later when substitute Leonardo Pavoletti slid in to guide the ball past goalkeeper Alban Lafont.

Fernandes and Fiorentina sit sixth ahead of their next fixture, which will see them travel to tenth-place Torino on Saturday evening.

Jordan Hugill appeared for the final eleven minutes of Middlesbrough’s 2-1 Championship win at Sheffield Wednesday on Friday evening.

The centre forward replaced goalscorer Britt Assombalonga at Hillsborough, where Boro’s victory took them top of the table, ahead of Sheffield United on goal difference.

Hugill and his teammates will hope to extend their lead at the top when they host Rotherham United on Tuesday evening.

In League One, Marcus Browne was denied a potential winning goal for Oxford United, who were held to a goalless draw at fellow strugglers Bristol Rovers.

Josh Cullen tasted victory with Charlton Athletic on Saturday

The U’s remain in the bottom four, a point from safety, with ten points from their opening 14 matches.
Browne will hope Oxford can return to winning ways on Tuesday, when they travel to The Valley to face Josh Cullen’s Charlton Athletic.

Cullen himself completed the full 90 minutes as Charlton defeated Barnsley 2-0 on Saturday, with Karlan Grant scoring both goals for Lee Bowyer’s side.

The south Londoners will kick-off Tuesday’s game four points outside the Play-Off places in ninth position, while Oxford are 22nd.

Elsewhere, Toni Martinez was introduced as a second-half substitute for Spanish Segunda Division club Rayo Majadahonda in a 2-1 defeat at CF Reus.

The striker played the final 26 minutes on his first appearance since 30 September, but was unable to find a goal as Reus snatched victory through Juan Dominguez’s low finish with four minutes remaining.

Newly-promoted Rayo Majadahonda sit 15th in the table ahead of Sunday’s trip to mid-table Osasuna.

Finally, Martin Samuelsen was a late substitute for VVV-Venlo, who defeated ADO Den Haag 2-0 at home in the Dutch Eredivisie.

The Norway winger replaced Johnatan Opoku in the final minute of the 90 as Venlo continued their bright start to the 2018/19 season by rising to fifth in the table ahead of a Friday night trip to Emmen.
