Kiernan: Hammers have stepped up a level for Everton clash

Leanne Kiernan believes West Ham United have taken themselves to another level in training this week as the side prepares to take on Everton Ladies.

Matt Beard's side will travel to Merseyside for this weekend's FA Women's Super League fixture looking to return to winning aways, after back-to-back defeats by Manchester City and Liverpool.

Although recent results have not gone West Ham's way, Kiernan believes there are positives that the Irons can take from last Sunday's match, saying the players are working hard to collect three points against the Toffees.

We needed to step it up a level, and I'm really happy to say that I think all the girls are doing exactly that. We're going into the Everton game with a lot of confidence.

"In the last two games, we've not got the results we've wanted," Kiernan told whufc.com. "But, we will stick together and keep working hard. In our squad we keep saying 'trust the process', and that's what we will do. I truly believe that this team will go on and win things.

"We've trained with a lot of intensity this week and I feel like we've all got the picture in that we needed to step it up a level, and I'm really happy to say that I think all the girls are doing exactly that. We're going into the Everton game with a lot of confidence."

Having picked up a slight injury, Kiernan was able to return to the starting XI versus the Reds last weekend, and the Republic of Ireland international is feeling positive about her return to action.

She continued: "It was really nice to get back on the pitch again. Unfortunately injures are part and parcel of football, but I’m over it and hopefully I’ll can stay fit for the rest of the season.

“Of course, it’s frustrating when you can’t play, but you’ve got to believe that the team can get a result. It’s frustrating and annoying, but you’ve got to deal with it and you can’t really be negative about it, you just have to take the positives.”

With Everton firmly in Kiernan's sights on Sunday, the 19-year-old is sure her and her teammates can turn chances into goals this weekend.

"I thought the second half of Liverpool was good for us," Kiernan added. "I thought we worked together as a team and we got a few chances on goal, but it’s about getting the goals and getting the result which, we didn’t do on the day.

“I definitely feel that this weekend we can get a result, we just need to take things that we’re learning in training in to the game, which I would say from this week’s training was brilliant and we can take it in to the game on Sunday.”
