Antonio: I can’t believe we lost the game

Michail Antonio wore a look of bemusement as he tried to explain how West Ham United had come away pointless from Manchester United on Saturday.

A pair of Paul Pogba penalties settled the clash at Old Trafford, 2-1 in the home side’s favour, but not before Felipe Anderson’s goal and two great chances for substitute Antonio gave Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side a real fright.

Antonio was particularly unlucky not to get on the scoresheet, smashing a shot against the bar on 76 minutes, then drawing an outstanding stop from David de Gea with his downward header two minutes later.

The No30 said the Hammers could take great pride from their display, even if the immediate reaction was one of frustration at the result.

“I can’t believe [we lost],” he said. “The team performance was unbelievable. I think in the first half we kept possession well, and with the football we were playing we did everything but score a goal.

“They had a pen to give them the lead, we scored a decent goal to get back in it before a second pen. It’s just one of those days where we did everything we could, but just didn’t get the point or three.

“I can’t believe neither of mine went in. Maybe for the header, I could have got a better connection to put it straight into the net instead of heading it down, but you want to keep it down.

“I still think it should have gone in! De Gea is definitely a cat isn’t he!

“We’ve come here and shown what we can do, it’s just a shame we didn’t get the three points. It shows we’ve got the fight and we’ll keep pushing until the end of the season.”
