Brosnan: Why I couldn’t pass up chance to play for West Ham

New signing Courtney Brosnan cannot wait to begin life as a West Ham United player and test herself in the Barclays Women’s Super League.

The shot-stopper put pen-to-paper with the Hammers on Friday, signing with the Irons from French club Le Havre, and is the women’s side’s sixth acquisition of the summer.

Having achieved her ambition of coming to England to ply her trade, Brosnan is eager to start wearing the West Ham shirt and step onto the pitch for the first time.

“I’m really excited to be here,” Brosnan told whufc.com. “It’s always been a dream of mine since I was young to play in England, so it’s really exciting to achieve that goal and see everything that I, and we, can accomplish at West Ham.

“I’m so excited to be in the Barclays Women’s Super League too. I’m really excited just to get the chance to play against these top clubs from across the world. Obviously West Ham’s well-renowned and known by so many different people, and I think that this will be such a good experience.”

Brosnan quote

Having been tempted to come to England by the test the Barclay WSL poses, it was the first conversation with head coach Matt Beard that swayed Brosnan to select West Ham as her destination.

The goalkeeper says the boss’ passion for player development and team spirit made choosing the Hammers one of the easiest decisions of her career.

She continued: “I love Matt. He made an impression right off the bat. “In our initial conversations, I just found him to be super genuine. I think he’s passionate and he’s creating a really great culture here with the girls.

"He’s super passionate about the game, about the Club and about the players. He’s really eager to move West Ham forward and build the team to improve on last year.

“I think everyone here’s really invested in the team and has goals moving forward. That was really big for me and I think that’s going to be really important for us this season.”

Having watched West Ham from afar last season, with the club reaching the FA Cup Final and finishing seventh in the league, Brosnan is excited for the challenge of trying to better the Hammers’ first professional campaign.

She added: “I’m beyond excited for the season to start. I know about how West Ham performed in the league and I obviously know about the FA Cup Final. I can see that this side is being well built and wants to progress, which is definitely something I want to be a part of.

“I can’t wait to get started so we can show everything we have out there on the pitch.”
