Loan watch: Browne on target, Oxford starts

Marcus Browne climbed off the substitutes’ bench to score a dramatic late equaliser as Oxford United held promotion-chasing Sunderland to a 1-1 draw at the Kassam Stadium.

Browne’s eighth goal of the season, which he scored from close-range from Jerome Sinclair’s cut-back, saw Oxford rise above Gillingham and out of the League One relegation zone.

Reece Oxford made his first Bundesliga start for Augsburg in Germany on Sunday, but his side fell to a 4-0 defeat at Bayer Leverkusen.

The 20-year-old had made his full debut for the Bavarian club last Wednesday evening, when he kept a clean sheet in a 1-0 German Cup third-round win at second-tier Holstein Kiel.

Edimilson Fernandes played the whole game for Fiorentina in Italy’s Serie A, where his team held Napoli to a goalless home draw but dropped to tenth in the table.

In Spain’s Segunda Division, Toni Martinez started for Lugo and played for the opening 70 minutes against Zaragoza, only to be withdrawn two minutes before the visitors scored their winning goal in a 2-1 victory.

Back in England, Jordan Hugill led the line for Middlesbrough in a 1-1 EFL Championship draw with Leeds United.
Boro looked on course for victory when Lewis Wing scored two minutes after half-time, only for Kalvin Phillips to equalise deep into added time at the Riverside Stadium.

Josh Cullen was another who completed the full 90 minutes, helping Charlton Athletic to a 1-1 draw with Southend United at The Valley in EFL League One. The south London side sit fifth in the table, but seven points behind Barnsley in the second automatic promotion position.

Moses Makasi played the opening 58 minutes as Stevenage were defeated 2-0 at Tranmere Rovers in EFL League Two – a loss which leaves the Hertfordshire club ninth in the table, four points behind Exeter City in the final Play-Off position.

Martin Samuelsen was again an unused substitute as VVV-Venlo defeated Willem II 2-1 in the Dutch Eredivisie, as was Joe Powell in Northampton Town’s EFL League Two draw at Lincoln City. Vashon Neufville was not involved as Newport County scored a 1-0 victory over Mansfield Town in EFL League Two.

Finally, Sead Haksabanovic’s IFK Norrkoping were not in action at the weekend. The Swedish club kick-off their domestic season with a Svenska Cupen Group B fixture with second-tier Varnamo on Sunday afternoon.
