Josh Cullen enjoyed the best weekend of West Ham United's on-loan players as he helped promotion-chasing Charlton Athletic to an important 2-1 victory over Portsmouth in EFL League One.
The midfielder provided the assist for Joe Aribo to put the Addicks in front at The Valley. Ronan Curtis equalised on the stroke of half-time before Lyle Taylor secured three points for Charlton six minutes after the break. Charlton are fifth but ten points behind Barnsley in the second automatic promotion place.
Moses Makasi played the opening 68 minutes for Stevenage in their League Two clash with Bury, but had been substituted before former West Ham striker Nicky Maynard struck a dramatic late winner for the Shakers. Stevenage remain eleventh in the table, but are now seven points outside the Play-Off places.
Jordan Hugill was introduced as a second-half substitute with Middlesbrough trailing 2-1 at home to Brentford in the Championship. However, the striker was unable to find an equaliser and was booked during his 16 minutes on the pitch. Former Hammer Ashley Fletcher had earlier given Boro the lead.
In League Two, Joe Powell appeared as a 78th-minute substitute for Northampton Town and helped the Cobblers extend their unbeaten run to six matches with a 2-1 win over Exeter City.
In Italy’s Serie A, Edimilson Fernandes played the opening 45 minutes of Fiorentina’s 1-1 draw with Lazio before being replaced by former Everton midfielder Kevin Mirallas.
Martin Samuelsen played the full 90 minutes as FK Haugesund continued their preparations for the 2019 Norwegian Eliteserien season by beating second-tier Sandnes Ulf 3-0 in a pre-season friendly. The winger could be in action again on Friday, when his hometown club face fellow top-flight club Odds BK.
Marcus Browne was an unused substitute as Oxford United slipped back into the League One relegation zone after losing 1-0 at Gillingham.
Vashon Neufville was not involved in Newport County’s 3-0 defeat at Colchester United in League Two.
In Germany’s Bundesliga, Reece Oxford missed Augsburg’s goalless draw at RB Leipzig through suspension.
In Spain, Toni Martinez’s Lugo were handed a 1-0 walkover victory over Reus, who have been removed from the Segunda Division for financial reasons.
And finally, in Sweden, Sead Haksabanovic’s IFK Norrkoping were beaten 2-1 by Jonkopings Sodra IF in a pre-season match.
