Conor Coventry helped Republic of Ireland U21s prepare for the 2019 Maurice Ravello Toulon Tournament with a stunning 2-1 victory over the senior national team on Thursday.
West Ham United youngster Coventry played for 45 minutes as the young Boys in Green scored a notable win over Mick McCarthy's squad, which included fellow Academy of Football graduate Josh Cullen, at the FAI National Training Centre.
Scott Hogan put the seniors in front after half-time before two goals from Jack Taylor turned the game in the U21s' favour.
Stephen Kenny's squad will now head to the south of France for the Toulon Tournament, where they will tackle China, Mexico and Bahrain. The Irish kick-off against China in Aubagne on Monday 3 June before tackling Mexico in Fos-sur-Mer on 6 June and Bahrain in Vitrolles on 9 June.
Meanwhile, West Ham's England goalkeeper Nathan Trott has been forced to withdraw from the same 16-nation tournament through injury.
The four group winners will contest the semi-finals on Wednesday 12 June, with the final taking place in Salon-de-Provence on Saturday 15 June. Playoff matches will also be held for the minor placings.
The tournament will be broadcast live in the UK by Free Sports on Freeview channel 64, Sky Sports channel 422, Virgin Media channel 553, Freesat channel 252, BT TV channel 64, TalkTalk TV channel 64.
Coventry and his compatriots have also discovered their 2019 UEFA European U19 Championship finals opponents after the draw was held in Yerevan on Friday.
The Irish, who have qualified for the tournament for the first time since 2011, when a squad containing West Ham's Eoin Wearen reached the semi-finals, will face Czech Republic, Norway and France in Group B.
The eight-nation finals will take place in Armenia between 14-27 July, with the hosts being drawn alongside holders Portugal, Italy and Spain in Group A.
Coventry and company will be hopeful of repeating their achievement of eight years ago, but to do so they will need to overcome the Czechs, who defeated them on the way to the final in 2011, the Norwegians and three-time champions France.
The 19-year-old midfielder, who was recently called up to the U21 squad for the first time, would be a key player for an Irish side which won all six matches in qualifying and has enjoyed a breakthrough 12 months.
The teenager won the Dylan Tombides Award last May before making his first-team debut for the Hammers in the 8-0 Carabao Cup win over Macclesfield Town at London Stadium in September and has since captained the Club’s U23 side in Premier League 2 Division 1.
Coventry, who had previously been capped by Ireland at U17 and U18 levels, made his U21 debut in a 2021 UEFA European Championship qualifier with Luxembourg in March.
