West Ham United’s opening Continental League Cup match ended in a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea, despite a battling effort by the away side.
The Hammers’ first fixture in the competition was decided by goals from Bethany England and Guro Reiten, although the second-half finishes only tell half the story of an entertaining game at Kingsmeadow.
Martha Thomas twice went close in the first period for the Hammers, when the match was still a goalless draw, while Anna Moorhouse was called upon to make two sensational saves, denying England and Adelina Engman.
