On This Day: Unstoppable Di Canio destroys Coventry

Taking a look back at a classic West Ham United moment on this day in history, presented by Heineken...

Paolo Di Canio was at his unstoppable best as West Ham United thrashed Coventry City on this day in 2000.

The Italian scored two and assisted two more of the Hammers' five goals as Harry Redknapp's side thumped the Sky Blues 5-0 at the Boleyn Ground.

Di Canio provided an eye-catching assist for Michael Carrick's 30-yard opener - the young midfielder's first goal in Claret and Blue - before his corner was headed in by Javier Margas.

The skipper made it 3-0 with a spectacular goal after half-time before adding his second and West Ham's fourth midway through the second half.

Amazingly, Di Canio was also involved in the fifth as Magnus Hedman fumbled his corner and Frederic Kanoute converted to complete a 5-0 victory.

West Ham finished the season in ninth, while Coventry ended the 1999/00 campaign in 14th.
