Yago finishes in third at South American Summer Cup

West Ham United’s ‘Yago’ Gabriel Fawaz reached the last three of the South American edition of the FIFA 20 Summer Cup Series this weekend.

Sporting his Claret and Blue eSports shirt, the Argentinean – who earlier in the week turned 20-years-old – was in superb form on the first day of the online competition, knocking out some of the world’s best players to qualify for the semi-finals.

That resulted in him being named the tournament’s South America Player of the Day by EA SPORTS, the competition’s organisers.

Although his second day ultimately led to his elimination from the competition, Yago continued to play some thrilling FIFA, rounding off his 2019/20 Global Series season in style with a third-placed continental finish.

The Summer Cups – a series of regional online tournaments – were organised to replace the global events cancelled in the wake of the global pandemic, including the FIFA eNations Cup 2020, Global Series Playoffs and FIFA eWorld Cup 20.

The eight best players on each continent were invited to participate – and, as such, the tournament represented the highest prize available this season for Yago and his fellow South American FIFA players.

The Hammer had finished third in his continent, and ninth globally on PlayStation4 – and was duly paired with the ninth-placing Xbox One player, Roma’s SpiderKong, in his first game.

Despite missing some key players from his side, Yago was in imperious form, bettering his opponent 3-1 over the two legs.

He continued this run with a sensational 5-2 victory over Benfica’s Zezinho, who had entered as tournament favourite, having finished second in the PlayStation4 rankings.

The result meant that, on the second day, Yago was paired with Atlanta United’s Brazilian player, PauloNeto, who was himself in superb form, defeating the Hammer 8-1 over the two legs before going on to win the Grand Final.

The tournament was structured such that Yago had a second chance to reach the Grand Final, but in a tense, entertaining contest, he fell 4-3 to Ronaldinho’s FIFA team representative, Gabrielpn.

Nevertheless, Yago was pleased to reach such an advanced stage of the top-tier competition, tweeting afterwards: “Thank you all very much for the support, and I congratulate Paulo Neto and Gabrielpn for reaching the Final.

“After doing this tournament, in FIFA 21, I’m going to work even harder to become a better player.”
