On This Day: Carlton Cole and Ricardo Vaz Tê fire West Ham United back to the Premier League

Taking a look back at a classic West Ham United moment on this day in history, in association with Heineken....

West Ham United won a hard-fought promotion back to the Premier League after beating Blackpool 2-1 at Wembley on this day in 2012.

Carlton Cole gave the Hammers the lead just past the half-hour mark with a well-taken goal, but Thomas Ince scored two minutes after the restart to put the Tangerines on level terms.

West Ham thought they had grabbed a winner with ten minutes to go as a deflected cross from Matt Taylor was met on the volley by the skipper Kevin Nolan, but his shot came crashing back off the crossbar.

Then, with extra-time looming large, the Hammers won it with just three minutes remaining.

A Nolan cross from the left caused pandemonium in the Blackpool area before Cole finally squeezed the ball off Blackpool goalkeeper Matt Gilks and into the path of Ricardo Vaz Tê, who expertly rifled the ball into the roof of the net.

The Portuguese forward ripped off his shirt while behind the goal 40,000 Hammers fans went wild. After a single season in the Championship, West Ham were back where they belonged.
