Tameka Yallop features as Australia finish fourth in Olympic Games

Tameka Yallop featured for Australia as they narrowly missed out on securing a bronze medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

The Matildas were beaten 4-3 by the USA in Kashima, finishing in fourth position in the competition - their best-ever finish at an Olympic Games.

Goalkeeper and fellow Hammer Mackenzie Arnold didn’t feature in the contest.

Megan Rapinoe scored twice in the first half for the United States, with Chelsea's Sam Kerr finding the net for Australia between those goals - her 48th strike for her country making Kerr her the Matildas' all-time leading scorer.

Carli Lloyd added a third for the world champions just before the break leaving Australia with a mountain to climb.

And the 39-year-old Lloyd added her second of the game six minutes after the restart after a defensive mix-up between Alana Kennedy and Teagan Micah at the back for the Matildas.

This didn’t deter Tony Gustavsson’s side, as Caitlin Foord found the net from close range to keep the lower-ranked team in the contest.

Moments later, Kerr was unfortunate to not add her second of the game as her header smashed off the upright, with momentum having well and truly swung the way of the Australians.

With 20 minutes remaining, Lloyd thought she’d scored her hat-trick after sliding the ball beyond Micah, but the officials ruled the goal out for offside.

Yallop was withdrawn in the 88th minute, having started in every match of the tournament.

Emily Gielnik grabbed a third for the Matildas to make the final four minutes of injury time interesting, but the USA hung on to clinch the bronze medal.

The Australians had drawn 0-0 with the Americans in the group stage but were unable to match Vlatko Andonovski’s side this time around.

West Ham United are immensely proud of both Tameka's and Mackenzie's efforts during Australia's run to the bronze-medal match, and we look forward to welcoming them back ahead of the upcoming campaign.
