Martha Thomas: We're not happy with just a point

Martha Thomas in action against Bristol City

Martha Thomas was disappointed that West Ham United were unable to complete their comeback against Bristol City on Sunday afternoon by going on to claim all three points.

The Hammers had to be content with one after Kateřina Svitková's second half strike cancelled out an unfortunate Emily van Egmond own goal for the visitors and ensured the final score would remain deadlocked at 1-1 at a snowy Dagenham & Redbridge Stadium.

West Ham could have moved five points clear of their visitors had they forced the win, so Scotland striker Thomas felt it was an opportunity missed.

"I don't think we would ever have been happy walking away today with a point," she admitted.

"Obviously we're happier to come back after falling behind to a really bad goal that we conceded, but we weren't good enough in the first half.

"Of course it was tough conditions and that's the first time I've ever played in snow. At the end of the day it was the same for both teams.

"There's no disadvantage or advantage for anyone so I don't think we'll blame the conditions at all, it's just our performance was not good enough.

"We were better in moments in the second half, but overall we all know it wasn't a good enough performance and we should, without a doubt, be walking away with three points today."

We need to move on, we need to pack it away, build on the second half and win at Brighton

The Hammers did show character to recover from the blow of conceding after just seven minutes, emerging strongly after the interval to level soon following the restart, and Thomas says that gives them something to build upon when they travel to Brighton & Hove Albion for another crucial Barclays FA Women's Super League contest on Wednesday.

"It's a lot of credit to us to show that intensity [to start the second half]," she added. "We knew the first half wasn't good enough, and we need to look ourselves on that, but to come out with the intensity we did in the second half [was good] and it's just a shame that it wasn't there in the first.

"But at the end of the day we should still be better in the second half to go on and take all three points. 45 minutes is enough time to score more than one goal, so we need to look at the performance and we need to be better.

"We need to move on, we need to pack it away, build on the second half and now it's an absolute must-win game for us at Brighton on Wednesday."
