West Ham United scored their first win of the pre-season with a hard-earned 2-1 victory at Northampton Town on Tuesday evening.
The Hammers were quick off the mark against their EFL League Two opponents and went ahead inside two minutes when the lively Jarrod Bowen's right-wing cross was shinned into the top corner of his own net by home defender Sid Nelson.
And it was 2-0 to Stuart Pearce's side eleven minutes later when a slick piece of interplay ended with captain Manuel Lanzini teeing up Conor Coventry and the Republic of Ireland U21 international finished accurately from outside the penalty area.
The Cobblers did pull a goal back through Sam Hoskins before half-time and created chances after replacing all ten outfield players in the second half, but goalkeeper Nathan Trott stood firm to ensure West Ham would travel back down the M1 as winners.
