Continental Tyres League Cup
Princes Park
Wednesday 13 October 2021

West Ham United will be looking to extend their unbeaten run to five matches when they travel to Princes Park to face London City Lionesses in the Continental Tyres League Cup.

Having picked up eight points from their last four matches, including wins over Leicester City and Manchester City, the Hammers will be looking to make the best possible start to their Conti Cup campaign.

Olli Harder’s side are in Group E of the Southern section, which will see them face off against London City Lionesses, Birmingham City and Brighton & Hove Albion, with the winner of the group guaranteed to progress to the knockout rounds.

Last season, West Ham United reached the Semi-final stage of the competition and were knocked out by the eventual winners, Chelsea at Kingsmeadow.

The Opposition

London City Lionesses were founded in May 2019 as an independent breakaway club from Millwall Lionesses. The transfer of Millwall's Championship licence was officially approved by the FA on 29 June 2019.

In their debut season under their new name, the Lionesses finished in 4th place on a Points Per Game basis, with the season curtailed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown.

American Head Coach, Melissa Phillips steered the Lionesses to a sixth placed finish last season but will be hoping to compete at the top end of the table this time around, as well as putting together a strong showing in the Conti Cup.

Amongst their ranks, London City boast a number of players that have had spells in the WSL, including 27-year-old Irish forward, Rianna Jarrett, who has 14 caps for her country and has found the net three times in her team’s opening five games.

Jamie-Lee Napier, formally of Chelsea and Birmingham City also calls Princes Park her home. She was named by UEFA as one of the ten most promising young players in Europe back in January 2020 and will be hoping to nail down some consistent game-time in the second division.

West Ham United have already visited Princes Park this season, playing their opening match of pre-season against the Lionesses. Mel Filis scored the only goal of the match with 30 minutes gone in what was a good workout for the Hammers. Olli Harder’s side have already had a glimpse at what their lower league opponents will offer on Wednesday evening.
