Lucas Paquetá and Brazil fell narrowly short of a ninth FIFA World Cup semi-final following a 4-2 defeat on penalties to Croatia.
The West Ham United midfielder looked to have secured a spot in the last four on his 39th cap when his delicious touch found Neymar, who netted the opening goal with 105 minutes played at Education City Stadium in Qatar.
But the 2018 runners-up struck a late equaliser through Bruno Petković to see the quarter-final end at 1-1 after extra-time and go to the lottery of a shoot-out.
With on loan Hammer at Torino Nikola Vlašić netting the first of Croatia's four successful penalties, Marquinhos needed to convert following Rodrygo's earlier miss from 12 yards.
However, the Paris Saint-Germain defender struck the final penalty against the post to see Brazil end the 2022 edition with heartbreak at the quarter-final stage.
Heartbreak for Paquetá and Brazil.
