Lifelong Hammer and skipper Dagný Brynjarsdóttir knows the importance of this weekend’s fixture against Tottenham Hotspur.
A home tie against visiting Spurs is a chance for West Ham United Women to not only steal the bragging rights in the local derby but also finish the season strongly too.
Separated by just three points in the Barclays Women’s Super League table ahead of kick-off, Sunday afternoon will be a proper battle. A London derby the curtain call of the 2022/23 campaign.
“The win over Leicester should give us confidence going into the Tottenham game,” the skipper stated. “Spurs is always going to be a great game, and hopefully, in front of our fans and families, we can get an important win.
“We have one game against Tottenham Hotspur left and we know that is going to be a huge battle. So, we just want to finish the season as high up the table as we can – and we need to win to do that.”
The Hammers and their skipper have fond memories of the reverse fixture earlier this season too. Back in December, Irons returned to winning ways in their final Barclays Women’s Super League match of the calendar year by beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in north London.
After a frustrating first-half display, which included skipper Brynjarsdóttir dragging a penalty wide, the Hammers surged to victory after the break.
The skipper bounced back from her earlier miss impeccably. A powerful finish followed by a neat chip from Hawa Cissoko secured the victory for the Hammers – a win they did not repeat until Leicester City last time out.
As such, a difficult run has hopefully been put behind Paul Konchesky’s side. The skipper also hopes to strike again, having converted a neat spot-kick against Leicester City last weekend.
“It means a lot to score for this Club,” Brynjarsdóttir enthused. “I hadn't scored since January, so it is nice to get back on the scoresheet, but I don’t care who scores the goals, as long as we get the win, I am happy
"We are in this to win games in the league, and we hadn’t done that since December, so it is a great feeling.
“Leicester gave us a tough game. We need they were going to have a lot of energy, be aggressive, and we would not have much time on the ball. We knew we had to show a lot of fight to get the points.
"I feel like the momentum hasn’t been with us this season but when we got the first goal, we gave everything that it takes to get the three points and get over the line. We want to do the same against Tottenham this weekend.”
