Chesters: Leicester City took their opportunities

Dan Chesters believes West Ham United U21s’ defeat at the hands of Leicester City simply comes down to the home side taking their chances on goal.

The development side fell 3-1 at the Leicester City Training Ground on Friday evening after two goals from George Hirst and a Tawanda Maswanhise finish.

Pierre Ekwah had added a goal for West Ham in the first half to reduce the scoreline but the Irons also saw also other opportunities go begging.

“It was disappointing,” Chesters reflected. “We had some good spells in the game but, at the end of the day, we just gave them too many chances. They took their opportunities and I guess we didn’t.

“We had a lot of momentum after Pierre got us our first goal. I think I should have got a penalty for a foul on me in the second half and then they immediately go up the other end and score, so that ends up killing our momentum. I think some of our heads dropped at that point, but we needed to keep going.”

Despite defeat on Friday being a third consecutive loss for the U21s, Chesters noted that the squad could take positives from each match and had performed reasonably well in each fixture.

The winger is hopeful the side can piece it all together in training ahead of the next match, at home to Everton next weekend.

“To be fair, in the three games we’ve played so far we haven’t played bad. There has been good moments in every single game and there has been a lot of good stuff. We just haven’t been able to add the final piece to the puzzle, but we are confident it will come.

“We’ve played three games and there’s been three losses, but there is a lot to take from each game. We’ve just got to keep going, keep improving, and be ready for Everton next Saturday.”
