Remy Coddington believes the effort put in by West Ham United U21s does not match the result earned against Manchester City.
The Hammers fell to a 4-1 loss to the reigning Premier League 2 champions at the City Academy Ground on Saturday, with all the goals coming in the second half.
The hosts had taken the lead on 50 minutes through Kane Taylor’s header, only for Pierre Ekwah to level from the penalty spot just two minutes later.
City restored their advantage through Kian Breckin’s finish before grabbing another two goals late on thanks to Will Dickson and Carlos Borges.
“The result doesn’t match the performance we gave,” Coddington told whufc.com. “We were brilliant in the first half, stuck to what we were told to do by the coaches and it worked for us, and we were 0-0 at half-time.
“I had two chances in the first half I maybe could have scored. But then we go into the second half and they get four goals, but I don’t think that reflects our efforts.
“We did so well to get back into the game with Pierre’s penalty. Maybe we just needed to keep the ball better and created more chances. Man City stuck to their game plan quite well.”
Coddington was included in the starting XI at Premier League 2 for the first time in this weekend’s match, and the 18-year-old was delighted with the opportunity up front.
With Divin Mubama serving a three-game suspension, Coddington knows he has a huge opportunity to represent the Irons and show what he can do.
“It was a great feeling to get the nod to start in this game. Especially in the first half, I feel like I put together some chances for my teammates and had some opportunities for the side. I put in some good crosses and I hope to keep getting chances.
“This is a good opportunity for me. I need to show Robbo that I’m able to play in this team. I need to do well and show what I’m about. Next week, we have to go again against Tottenham Hotspur, and get our season going, and I hope I can play well.”
