Craig Dawson: We’ll get back to the training ground and work hard

Craig Dawson admitted that West Ham United felt the frustration of letting a lead slip as they shared the points with Newcastle United on Saturday.

The Hammers defender headed his team in front on 32 minutes – scoring his second goal in as many games – only for Joe Willock to hit back on the stroke of the interval.

West Ham would huff and puff in the second period, but could not find a way past a resolute Newcastle for a second time, leaving Dawson and his teammates to reflect on a missed opportunity.

“It was a game of few chances,” the No15 said. “We took the lead, so to let it slip just before half-time was disappointing.

“For the goal It was a great ball in from Cressy. Set piece goals are a strong point to our game and we work hard on them. It’s nice to chip in.

“They had a couple of chances [in the run up to the equaliser], we didn’t quite clear our lines and we got punished in the end.”

Having suffered that blow just before the interval, the Hammers were keen to get back on the front foot, only to be repelled by a strong Newcastle defensive effort.

Dawson says his team will dust themselves down and get set for another home meeting with Wolverhampton Wanderers next weekend.

“The talk at half time was to keep going, keep working hard and we needed to get at them a little bit more,” he added. “But Newcastle are on a good run and a point was probably fair in the end.

“It’s disappointing to pick up a couple of draws in a row, but they are two good sides so we’ll get back to the training ground, work hard and see what happens next week.”
