Aaron Cresswell felt West Ham United could have taken more than the one point they managed against Burnley on Sunday.
Tomáš Souček’s 74th minute finish cancelled out a first half header from Netherlands international Wout Weghorst, setting up a grandstand finish in which Clarets keeper Nick Pope produced outstanding saves to deny Issa Diop and Michail Antonio.
It all added up to a frustrating afternoon for the Hammers, who would have moved up to fifth in the Premier League table hgad they found that second goal.
Cresswell, who returned to the starting XI having missed the UEFA Europa League win over Lyon in midweek, admitted to disappointment at the result but said the players would reset once more and go again for the final month of the campaign.
It was really frustrating.
For the first 20-25 minutes I thought we were on top and then the unfortunate injury for Westwood kind of killed the game.
There were a couple of incidents in the crowd too, I don’t really know what happened, and first and foremost I hope everybody is well.
We didn’t really get going for the rest of the first half after that, but Pope’s made a few unbelievable saves, we had a couple off the line, a few big chances, but it just wasn’t really our day.
It’s the nature of doing well that when you’re playing against teams like, no disrespect, Burnley, the expectation is to beat these teams.
I’ve been in the game long enough to understand that it’s not as easy as that, but I thought we had some big chances and big moments in the game and we just couldn’t score them.
On a positive note we got a draw.
We’ve been in that position and know what it’s like.
They’ve only got six or seven games left and are fighting for their lives.
These type of games are never, ever easy. As I say we can only deal with what we didn’t do too well, put it right on the training pitch and look forward to the game at Chelsea next week.
The expectation comes from where we are now
Europa League semi-finals, fighting for fourth to sixth spot and we want to be up there fighting to finish as high as we can.
We’re going to give everything we’ve got, everyone knows that’s what we do. The last two years have been incredible and we’re going to fight until the end.
I was there with the boys in Lyon supporting them and it was an incredible, incredible night to be in amongst it all with the lads.
We had a few setbacks with my sending-off and Kurt being injured, and the lads who came in were unbelievable.
What a night for the Club, for the fans who have been with us for years while we were fighting relegation, I’m sure they’ll be delighted to see us in the quarter-finals, knocking Lyon out 3-0 in their ground. It was just unbelievable and now there’s a semi-final to come. Bring it on.
There have been a lot of games coming thick and fast in the last few weeks. We’ve got a normal week this week – a day off on Monday, so we’ll rest up and return fully focused come Tuesday.
