On This Day: Ashton double downs City in FA Cup quarter-final

It was on this day in 2006 that Dean Ashton's double defeated Manchester City and fired West Ham United through to the FA Cup semi-finals.

Ashton had joined West Ham United from Norwich City for a Club-record £7.25 million fee two months earlier and immediately set about repaying it by scoring in Premier League wins over Sunderland and Birmingham City at the Boleyn Ground.

After adding a third league goal in a 2-2 draw with Bolton Wanderers, Ashton etched his name into Hammers folklore on just his seventh appearance, bagging both goals in this memorable 2-1 FA Cup quarter-final victory against the Citizens.

West Ham went on to reach the final, where Ashton scored again in a thrilling 3-3 draw with Liverpool, only for the Reds to run out winners following a penalty shootout.
