Mikel Arteta with Carlos Tevez

On This Day: Great Escape gathers pace with Everton win

Taking a look back at a classic West Ham United moment on this day in history, presented by Heineken...

West Ham United's miraculous escape from relegation from the Premier League in the spring of 2007 gathered pace with a 1-0 home win over Everton on this day 15 years ago.

Alan Curbishley's Hammers got the better of David Moyes' Blues thanks to a 13th-minute goal from centre-forward Bobby Zamora, who fired home following exquisite build-up play involving Yossi Benayoun.

Zamora and Benayoun both missed further opportunities to stretch the Irons' lead, but a strong defensive display led by James Collins earned West Ham a clean sheet and a vital win on their way to achieving safety.

Mikel Arteta, who will manage Arsenal against his former Everton boss's West Ham this coming weekend, missed the visitors' best chance to equalise at the Boleyn Ground.

West Ham went on to stay up, of course, courtesy of Carlos Tevez's winning goal on the final day of the season at Manchester United.
