Flynn Downes commended the all-around performance of teammate Emerson, who scored his first Premier League goal for West Ham United in a 1-1 draw against Chelsea on Saturday.
The wing-back pulled the Irons level after João Felix’s opener when he ran onto Jarrod Bowen’s flick-on, poking home with 28 minutes played at London Stadium.
The Italian's goal helped the Hammers make it three Premier League games without defeat and lifelong West Ham fan and midfielder Downes is hoping that run will continue at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
“You are really seeing his quality,” Downes enthused. “He is a top player and a great guy as well. You can see what he is about, he has played for top clubs, and now he is doing it here.
“For a modern full-back, you have got to do everything. But he is that: he scores goals, he’s good at defending, and he’s good on the ball; what more could you want?”
Downes, who replaced Saïd Benrahma 33 minutes from time and helped the Hammers hold off Chelsea's expensively-assembled side late on, was part of a strong second-half performance that stretched the Club’s unbeaten run to four matches in all competitions.
The Irons might have nabbed a memorable win too had a late winner from Tomáš Souček not been disallowed due to a VAR call of off-side in the build-up on Declan Rice.
Instead, the spoils were shared in east London. Downes, though, is confident the Hammers are heading in the right direction. They have taken five points from their last three league games and go hunting for more in N17 this coming weekend.
“If you look at the last couple of performances, we have been very good, very solid,” the No12 added. “Everyone has got a bit of confidence [from the Everton win].
“It rubs off in training as well, the last couple of weeks of training has been very good. Going out on Saturday, you can see we are a lot more together.
“We started a bit slow, but I think momentum is building and we can take that into next weekend. We have just got to keep it going now, got to keep this momentum building, get a few wins, and I think we will be good.”
