Emerson lauded West Ham United’s professional attitude after they eased past Derby County to book their place in the fifth round of the Emirates FA Cup on Monday night.
Derby entered Monday night’s fourth round tie having only tasted defeat once in their last 19 games – and that a penalty shootout loss to Liverpool in the EFL Cup – but goals at the start of both halves from Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio quashed any hopes of the League One side springing a shock.
West Ham ultimately ran out comfortable 2-0 victors at Pride Park Stadium, setting up a tie at Manchester United in the last 16 in the process – and Emerson was thrilled with the result.
“We did well,” the No33 smiled. “In the first half, we started well, scored the first goal, but after we conceded [some ground] to them.
“We started well again in the second half, and scored to make it 2-0 and for sure the second half was better for us.
“Derby played very well and in the cup games it’s always like this. It’s just one game and if you win you go to the next phase, so they are always difficult games.
“For us, we did well because we played away in their stadium. The most important thing was the victory.”
Not only was Monday’s triumph a second straight victory, but also a second consecutive game without conceding a goal.
Both elements were pleasing for the Italy international, who has been enjoying his role at wing-back supporting both the defence and the team’s attacking players.
“Of course, we are happy because it is two games without conceding any goals, so we need to continue in this way,” he continued.
“It’s good, playing this position. I’ve played in the back four, and sometimes in the back five. Now, here at West Ham I’ve been playing in a back five and I’m happy because I can go in the attack more to help the strikers.”
Next up for the Hammers is another away day, this time at Newcastle United in the Premier League, and the trip to St James’ Park is a challenge Emerson is relishing.
“We need a positive mentality, and the last two games have given us confidence,” he added. “Still, we need to work hard in every game.
“Newcastle are a good team and have done very well this season, but we can go there and we can win.”
