England were victorious in the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 final on Sunday evening, overcoming Germany 2-1 at Wembley.
The Lionesses were spurred on by a UEFA tournament record crowd of 87,192 at the National Stadium in London, as Serina Wiegman's side got the job done in extra time thanks to Chloe Kelly’s winner in extra time.
Ella Toone oozed class as she opened the scoring in the 62nd minute, chipping the ball over Merle Frohms in the Germany goal.
The Germans pegged them back and forced the game into extra time after Lina Magull equalised with just over ten minutes of normal time remaining.
Weigman made several changes throughout the game, and brought on Kelly in the second half – who proved to be the match-winner.
After a scramble inside the area, Kelly found the back of the net, which queued an emphatic celebration from the Manchester City forward, who had missed most of the 2021/22 WSL season due to a serious injury.
A party-like atmosphere ensued at Wembley as England held onto the lead to lift the trophy on a landmark day for the women’s game!
Former West Ham United defender Rachel Daly played 88 minutes in the victory, which is England’s first major trophy win since the men’s team lifted the 1966 World Cup.
