Interval Training in Evian

There was next to no rest for West Ham United's first-team stars as a testing pre-season training camp continued in the French town of Évian-les-Bains.

Monday evening saw the Hammers race around the track surrounding their training pitch in groups, completing 200m runs in 32 seconds or less. With three groups relaying around the track, that meant the players covered around a mile in eight intervals.

Fitness coaches Nick Davies and Josh Ewens oversaw proceedings, with assistant coach Kevin Nolan and colleagues leading the encouragement as the lactic acid built up in the players' legs.

Following that draining exercise, the players ended a long and fitness-building day with a warm-down and a series of stretches to aid recovery.

Light rain began to fall as the session ended and continued as the players walked the short distance back to their hotel. Seconds later, the Alpine heavens opened!

Thankfully, the rain had abated completely come Tuesday morning, when the squad headed back to the Stade Camille Fournier to continue their build-up to the 2022/23 campaign.

This time, footballs were to the fore as manager David Moyes and Nolan took two groups in a series of 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 and 4v4 drills that also involved the goalkeepers.

There were goals and saves aplenty in the hot sunshine, while the players got more useful kilometres into their legs ahead of the big Premier League kick-off at home to Manchester City on Sunday 7 August.

Club photographer Jimmy Griffiths was on hand at both sessions to capture the best of the action.
