West Ham United is delighted to announce the appointment of Mark Warburton as a first-team assistant coach.
The former Brentford, Rangers, Nottingham Forest and Queens Park Rangers manager has taken charge of nearly 350 matches, winning two promotions and a succession of individual awards, and will add experience and know-how to David Moyes’ backroom staff.
Warburton led Brentford to the EFL Championship Play-Offs and Rangers to the Scottish Premiership title before most recently enjoying three productive seasons at Queens Park Rangers, culminating in a top-half Championship finish last term.
The 59-year-old is looking forward to getting down to work when the Hammers return for pre-season training at Rush Green this weekend.
“It’s a huge privilege to be joining West Ham United to work as part of David Moyes' backroom staff,” said Warburton.
“West Ham have made incredible progress in recent seasons, continually making forward strides to move the Club in a positive direction.
“I am excited about coming in and adding my own experience and know-how to what is an incredibly strong coaching team here.”
Manager Moyes welcomed Warburton, who will join Billy McKinlay, Paul Nevin Kevin Nolan and Xavi Valero on the Scot’s coaching team.
“I'm really pleased to welcome Mark to West Ham United,” said Moyes. “He’s a really valuable addition to the backroom team, in the wake of Stuart Pearce leaving us at the end of last season.
“Mark is hugely experienced and has a fine track record, having managed at a number of Club’s over the course of his career.
“I’m excited about adding him to my coaching set-up as one of my assistants.”
Born in London, Warburton won the FA Trophy and Alliance Premier League as a player with Enfield before retiring through injury. He became a successful City trader before returning to football, travelling to some of Europe’s leading clubs to gain an insight into the game at the elite level before being appointed as Watford’s Academy manager in 2006.
Warburton worked with Brentford owner Matthew Benham to create the NextGen Series youth tournament before being appointed the Bees’ first-team coach, sporting director and, in December 2013, manager. In 18 months in charge at the west London club, Warburton won promotion from League One, two Manager of the Month awards and led the Bees to fifth in the Championship.
The summer of 2015 saw Warburton move to Rangers, where he led the Glasgow club to the Scottish Championship title and Scottish Challenge Cup, won three Manager of the Month awards and was named PFA Scotland Manager of the Year.
Warburton returned south of the border in early 2017, joining Nottingham Forest, before taking over at Queens Park Rangers in May 2019. There, he created an exciting team that included the likes of Eberechi Eze, Bright Osayi-Samuel and Ilias Chair, and led the Hoops to three solid mid-table finishes in the Championship.
West Ham United would like to welcome Mark to London Stadium and wish him every success during his time at the Club.
