Former West Ham United winger Matt Jarvis was hugely impressed with the Irons’ performance in Sunday’s 4-0 Premier League win over another of his former clubs, Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The Irons put together arguably their most complete display since David Moyes returned to London Stadium last December, comprehensively outplaying a Wolves side which finished seventh and reached the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals last season.
And Jarvis, who spent five seasons in Old Gold before joining West Ham for a four-year spell in 2012, told whufc.com he believes the way West Ham played will give everyone at the Club a huge boost…
Well, what a performance! You could tell that, all week, they had been working on their shape, their pressing, their defending and their closing down of space. I thought the whole team did extremely well, going right from the front to the back.
What a performance Michail Antonio has put in! He kept all three Wolves centre-backs busy, he handled them, every time the ball came up to him it stuck, he ran the channels… What an incredible performance from him.
Jarrod Bowen is a fantastic player and it was great to see him do well and score two fantastic goals. The first one was a great piece of thinking by Pablo Fornals to take the quick free-kick and you can’t show Bowen onto his left foot, because you know he wants to go there. He got it into position and curled a beautiful shot into the far corner.
In midfield, Tomas Soucek has got amazing timing getting into the opposition box and when you are the size he is, with his aerial ability, he’s always going to carry a threat. He has been a revelation for West Ham since he arrived.
At the back, if you look at the defending that the West Ham team did, they were all back in their shape and filled in the gaps. Angelo Ogbonna won everything in the air that came into their box, Aaron Cresswell was pushing up the pitch and both him and Arthur Masuaku were putting in fantastic crosses. As a wide player, you want to get wide and get balls into the box and Masuaku did that repeatedly.
Overall, what a fantastic performance. Every single player and staff member came out, with David Moyes not able to be there and having to manage in person, and really gave everyone a massive, massive boost.
