West Ham United women return from the international break with a FA Women’s Super League derby at Arsenal on Sunday, with Kateřina Svitková determined to spring a surprise against the league leaders.
Having already defeated Manchester City this season, the Hammers will have confidence that they can gain a result against another of the WSL powerhouses and continue their solid start to the season.
With Sunday’s 6.45pm kick-off at Boreham Wood’s Meadow Park also being screened live by Sky Sports, Svitková and her teammates know they have an excellent opportunity to showcase their talents on the big stage.
“If we press them high and are fast in transition I think we will have opportunities to score goals,” she explained.
“We have a great manager and coaches and they will set us up well to play against them. I saw them play against my previous club Slavia in the Champions League and I think we will have some chances.
“Of course we have to be really consistent in our defensive shape because they will have a lot of passes between us, but if we talk a lot I think we’ll be okay.
“The girls have got their confidence from the last two games against top teams last season. We could have got at least one point from those games, and now we feel strong after beating Man City this year. We have to show what we are capable of.
“Women’s football is growing and a lot of people have to see how women’s football is improving – Sunday’s game is a great opportunity for us.”
