Asseyi named in France preliminary 2023 FIFA World Cup squad

West Ham United Women's forward Viviane Asseyi has been named in France's preliminary 26-player squad ahead of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.

The competition takes place across Australia and New Zealand throughout July and August with France boss Herve Renard heading into his first major tournament in charge of Les Bleues. The former Morocco and Saudi Arabia manager will trim his squad down to 23 players in the lead up to the tournament commencing.

Asseyi scored six goals across the 2022/23 season, her first in the Barclays Women's Super League (WSL) having arrived from Bayern Munich last summer.

France have been drawn in Group F and will face Brazil, Jamaica and Panama in their three matches. Indeed, Renard's team will hope to advance to the knockout stages with relative ease, they are the highest ranked team in their group and currently sit 5th in the latest FIFA World Rankings.

France kick off their World Cup campaign on Sunday 23 July, where they will take on Jamaica at Sydney Football Stadium. Before that, they will play warmup matches against Republic of Ireland and hosts Australia on 6 July and 14 July respectively.

The 29-year-old is one of five players named in the squad that all play their club football in England, with Chelsea's Ève Périsset, Manchester United duo Aïssatou Tounkara and Estelle Cascarino and Aston Villa midfielder and former Hammer Kenza Dali also called up from WSL sides for the tournament.
