Dagný Brynjarsdóttir was pleased to finish the season positively after being named the 2022/23 Women's Hammer of the Year.
The Hammers played their part in a thrilling 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday afternoon, as the Women’s Super League season drew to a close.
The visitors took the lead against the run of play after 20 minutes at the Chigwell Construction Stadium, as Bethany England headed the ball into the bottom corner.
The Irons responded superbly though, and were in front before the interval after Emma Snerle’s curing effort and an own goal by Kit Graham.
England equalised after the break and the points were shared in East London despite a flurry of late chance for the Hammers.
Whilst Brynjarsdóttir was disappointed not to pick up all three points, the West Ham captain was delighted with the team’s performance.
“I think that was one of our best performances for a while,” she said. “We were quite unlucky not to take all three points today.
“We created quite a lot and they scored from counter attacks and also from our mistakes. I obviously wanted to take all three points but I’m pleased that we played well.
“The point means that we stay ahead of Tottenham in the table and I think that was a big thing for us.”
The No10 been a key cog for the Irons this season, featuring in 21 out of 22 Women’s Super League matches this season, and scoring six goals.
Upon receiving the award, the 31-year-old said: “It is an honour to win it, but I think that a number of other players also could have won it. I just went out on the pitch and always tried my best so I’m really thankful that people voted for me.”
After a difficult period after Christmas, Brynjarsdóttir suggested that it was vital for the Hammers to finish the season in a positive manner.
“It was definitely good for us to finish the season with a good performance. It makes us feel a bit better now that we’re going into a break.
“We did quite well heading into Christmas but we wanted to do better than we did in the second half of the season.
"We got three points in the last game and a point today. We played some good football today as well so I think we finished quite well.”
