West Ham United Women take on Tottenham Hotspur in their final Barclays Women’s Super League match of the calendar year on Sunday afternoon, and forward, Viviane Asseyi is hoping that the team can get back to winning ways.
The France international has featured in all eleven matches that the side have played in all competitions so far this season, weighing in with five goals.
Asseyi, who joined from German side, Bayern Munich in the summer has added energy to the Hammers forward line, whilst her tenacity to work hard for the team out of possession has also been a factor in the teams start to the 2022/23 campaign.
And now they look to bounce back against London rivals Spurs at The Breyer Group Stadium on Sunday afternoon, and Asseyi is hoping that the team can finish strongly in the league before the Christmas break sets in.
“It’s important that we get back to winning ways, but also so that we keep the pressure on those further up the division,” Asseyi told whufc.com.
“We know that our performance last weekend against Liverpool was not good enough, so we need to go out there and give it everything.
"We looked back on what was missing from our performance last weekend, and there were a lot of things. We didn’t fight like we usually do and we didn’t play together as a team, so we have to react on Sunday."
Whilst this will be Asseyi’s first fixture against Spurs, she has been doing her research. She reveals that she has been talking to her teammates about the importance of picking up a good result against the Lilywhites.
“I asked the girls before the game was coming up, because it looks as though nobody in London really likes Tottenham!
“They said that every game against them is like going into battle, and they said that it means so much to the supporters to come out on top in these matches. We not only have to do it for the fans, but also for ourselves.”
There is also the small matter of the men’s World Cup in Qatar, where England will be taking on France in the quarter-finals on Saturday evening.
Asseyi, who has played 58 times for the women’s national side, is expecting a victory for France.
“I will have to keep my celebrations to a minimum if we do get the victory,” Asseyi laughed. “But I think it will be an incredibly tough game – England have a lot of really good players, but I think that my country can get the job done and advance.”
