Brynjarsdóttir and Iceland prepare for World Cup qualification showdown

It’s a big night ahead for Dagný Brynjarsdóttir and Iceland.

Stelpurnar okkar are currently top of Group C going into their final 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualification match.

They face off against the Netherlands on Tuesday evening – who are only one point behind them going into this showdown match, with the winner advancing to the World Cup.

Brynjarsdóttir scored twice in a 6-0 victory over Belarus in Reykjavik on Thursday, and the win has put them in the driving seat.

The clash against the Netherlands in Utrecht will not be an easy one, with Oranje boasting Barclays Women’s Super League stars like Vivianne Miedema, Jackie Groenen and Aniek Nouwen. They were also runners-up at the 2019 World Cup, losing 2-0 to the United States in the final.

A point would be enough for Brynjarsdóttir and co to book their place at the upcoming finals, which will take place next summer in Australia and New Zealand.

Elsewhere, the Republic of Ireland have the opportunity to make their route to the finals a slightly easier one; that is if they can beat Slovakia in their final outing in Group A.

Last Thursday night was a memorable one for the Girls in Green, as they booked their place in the play-offs with a 1-0 win over Finland at the Tallaght Stadium in Dublin.

And now Jess Ziu and Izzy Atkinson have the chance to know that a win would see them qualify for the second round of the play-offs, meaning they would only have to win one match rather than two to potentially qualify for the finals next summer.

Hawa Cissoko could feature for France in their final qualifying match against Greece in Sedan.

The defender played 90 minutes in the 9-0 demolition of Estonia, and with France having already qualified for the World Cup, Manager Corinne Diacre could opt to name the 25-year-old in the starting line-up again.
