Dagný Brynjarsdóttir named as new West Ham United Women's captain

West Ham United are delighted to announce that Dagný Brynjarsdóttir has been appointed captain of the Women’s team for the 2022/23 season.

The Iceland international is about to embark on her second full season with the Club that she supports, having joined the Hammers in January 2021 from Selfoss.

The midfielder has played a crucial role since arriving in East London, making 37 appearances across all competitions and scoring six times during the 2021/22 campaign – helping the team to their highest ever finish, sixth, and points tally, 27, in the Barclays Women’s Super League.

Brynjarsdóttir will lead Paul Konchesky’s side into their fifth season in the top flight, and the new skipper is delighted to be doing so.

“First and foremost, I'm honoured that I have been chosen to be captain of the Club and have been trusted to do so,” said the Hella-born player, who starred for her country at this summer’s UEFA European Women’s Championship finals in England.

“To be the second captain in the Club’s WSL history is a very proud achievement. Gilly [Flaherty] was a great team captain and I think it's going be hard to follow on from her and the impact that she had.

“I had the privilege of playing alongside Gilly for a year and a half and I learnt a lot from her – I'm very thankful for that.

“I’m very excited to be taking on this leadership role. It suits my personality and my characteristics. The captaincy will put a bit more pressure on me to take responsibility and I think I’m good at doing that. It will let my personality shine a bit more.”

Konchesky is equally as pleased to have the 31-year-old take the armband for his first season as the Hammers’ head coach.

“I’m delighted to have Dagný as the captain of this team,” he confirmed. “She’s somebody who works incredibly hard and optimises the values that we have here at West Ham United.

“Dagný is somebody that I believe is a natural leader and with this extra responsibility on her shoulders, will help us to continue moving forward as a team.

“For me personally, this appointment is extra special as Dagný will be my first captain since becoming a manager. I’m sure that she will do a fantastic job for the team and I look forward to seeing her go from strength to strength on and off the grass.”

Brynjarsdóttir has also taken a new squad number for her first season as captain and will wear the No10 shirt.

Everyone at West Ham United would like to wish Dagný the very best of luck in leading the team into the new Barclays Women’s Super League season.
