Lisa Evans said that West Ham United Women’s 0-0 draw with Liverpool was a game of two halves.
The Scotland international started for the Hammers in one of two changes by Manager Paul Konchesky, as his side went in search of their first point in the Barclays Women’s Super League since the beginning of February.
Evans was involved immediately from the off, almost setting up Dagný Brynjarsdóttir in the opening five minutes, but the Claret & Blue skipper couldn’t steer her header on target.
The midfielder says that it gives her side something to build on once they return from the international break, which begins next week.
“It was definitely a game of two halves out there today,” Evans told West Ham TV at the full time whistle.
“I thought we dominated the first half and did really well – we had two or three really good chances that we should have put away. Then they came back out in the second half and were the better team.
“I think we’ll take the point – it’s always good to get a clean sheet too, that will be important because it’s something that we’ve not had in recent weeks and that will build confidence. It’s something to build on and it’s upwards from here.”
Both sides gave one another very little time to rest, with the game being played at a frantic pace for the majority of the contest in the east London sunshine.
And in front of a crowd of over two thousand, the Irons worked incredibly hard to make sure that they kept their clean sheet intact, epitomised by Grace Fisk’s heroics at the end of the game to block Katie Stengel’s effort when the American thought she was going to win the game for the Reds.
“We always knew it was going to be tough against Liverpool,” Evans admitted.
“They’re a side that like to change what they do, and can be flexible with their systems. We knew what we were going to be coming up against, but also knew it could change at any time, like it did towards the end of the second half.
“We had to work hard, but that is a given from this team, we have to give 100% if we are to pick up points – especially at home when we have a such a good crowd cheering us on.
“I thought it was quite an evenly contested contest though, and I reckon that both sides will be pretty happy with a draw on reflection.”
Now, the Irons prepare for three weeks without a fixture, with their next WSL game coming against Manchester City on Sunday 23 April at the Academy Stadium – a fixture that will be shown live on Sky Sports.
For Evans, it was good that the team were able to get a point on the board as they head into the two weeklong international break with something to build on.
“The last thing you want is to go into the international break with a loss, then all you want to do is be back on the pitch and try and put it right – you don’t get that chance with the break.
“We’ll all go our separate ways now, get back together and go from there against Manchester City,” she concluded.
