In partnership with the Prince’s Trust, the West Ham United Foundation (WHUF) is providing training and employment opportunities for young people, aged 18-30, who are interested in working in the Health and Social Care sector and supply chains.
This programme caters to all young people looking for support gaining work experience or employment in the sector, regardless of qualifications or previous experience. Both organisations will work with young people who are in college or university studying Health and Social Care, young people who are not in employment, education or training; as well as those who are in employment, but would like to change careers to work within Health and Social Care.
The project aims to support young people who wish to work in the sector by providing them with the necessary skills and connecting them with local employers to identify appropriate and suitable job opportunities.
The training and employment programme is designed to give young people the skills and opportunities to succeed in a Health and Social Care workplace. Once young people have registered to the project, they are matched with a WHUF mentor who will provide them with bespoke support. This includes a personal development plan which identifies a young person’s strengths, areas of improvement, and targets for the future.
Mentors will work with programme members to help them achieve their goals. Participants will also receive six hours’ worth of group workshops where they will work through our professional development curriculum which covers: career pathways, workplace etiquette, confidence and self-esteem, communication skills, leadership, and personal development.
The programme is ultimately designed to help young people become work ready and successful in finding employment in the Health and Social Care sector. Overall, the training and employability programme includes:
- Coaching – to identify goals and support needs, and to create a personal development plan.
- Pre employment training programme – for skills development designed to support young people in becoming work ready.
- Work insights – workplace visits, guest speakers, and work experience to give young people an insight into the health and social care sector.
- Employability skills – support with CVs, job applications, interview skills.
- Volunteering and social action – to build confidence, self-esteem, and professional skills.
- Ongoing mentoring – from professionals working in Health and Social Care roles.
As part of this project, the Prince’s Trust and WHUF are delivering a free Health and Social Care Recruitment Roadshow event at the London Stadium on Wednesday 19 October. This is an opportunity for young people to kickstart their career in the Health and Social Care sector by participating in workshops, receiving employment support from Prince’s Trust and WHUF staff members to improve their CV and discuss interview techniques, as well as meeting numerous employers from the sector. Young people attending this event will have exclusive access to the employers on the day, with the opportunity of participating in speed interviews.
The employers in attendance at this event will have roles that are available, so will be looking to hire young people. Employers include the NHS Foundation Trust, King’s College Hospital, care providers MHA and Cera +, and more!
Furthermore, those who are interested in working in the Health and Social Care sector but are not successful in getting a job outcome on the day, can still be enrolled in training and employment support programmes that will help them develop their skills and work towards obtaining employment in the future.

At present, only 5% of the workforce in Health and Social Care is under 26 years old. This is evidence that we need a much younger workforce in the Health and Social Care sector, which is why this work is crucial.
