A number of West Ham United Women’s international stars were in action for their respective countries on Saturday.
With 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifying all but complete, a number of four-team round-robin invitational tournaments are taking place around the globe.
The Pinatar Cup is being held in San Pedro del Pinatar on Spain’s Mediterranean coast.
There, on Saturday evening, West Ham captain Dagný Brynjarsdóttir was introduced as a second-half substitute as Iceland were held 0-0 by Wales in their second match, having beaten Scotland 2-0 in their opening game on Wednesday.
Iceland created just one shot on target in the 90 minutes and could not find their way past a determined Welsh defence. The stalemate left Iceland top of the table, ahead of Wales on goal difference.
Scotland are third following a 2-1 win over the Philippines in Saturday’s early game, with West Ham’s Kirsty Smith and Lisa Evans both starting for the Scots. Smith completed the full 90 minutes in defence, while Evans played the first half in midfield as Glasgow City’s Lauren Davidson and Aston Villa’s Rachel Corsie got the goals.
Matchday three sees Scotland take on Wales at 2pm and Iceland tackle the Philippines at 7.30pm on Tuesday 21 February.
Three West Ham players were also in action at the Tournoi de France on Saturday.
Emma Snerle started and was booked as Denmark defeated Norway 2-0 at the Stade Francis Le Basser in Laval. The midfielder was replaced with 28 minutes remaining as her country bounced back from a defeat by France in their opening match.
Speaking of France, former Hammer Kenza Dali was among the scorers as the host nation made it two wins from two with a 5-1 victory over Uruguay in Angers. Irons duo Hawa Cissoko and Viviane Asseyi both started the game before being replaced on 46 and 70 minutes respectively.
France top the table with six points, with Denmark and Norway on three. The final round of matches on Tuesday 21 February sees Denmark square off with Uruguay at 5pm in Laval, before France face Norway in Angers at 8.10pm.
