Sophie Hillyerd makes switch to West Ham United Women

West Ham United Women are delighted to confirm the signing of promising goalkeeper Sophie Hillyerd

The 19-year-old joins the Club from Barclays Women’s Championship side, Charlton Athletic.

Hillyerd began her career with Bristol City, where she spent seven years before her talent was spotted by Manchester United. After a season with the Red Devils, she decided to move to London and joined the Addicks last summer.

The shot-stopper has also been called up to represent England at U19 level in recent times.

Now, Hillyerd is making the move across the River Thames to join the Irons, and the teenager is excited for what’s to come.

“I’m really pleased to join West Ham,” Hillyerd told whufc.com. “The facilities are fantastic and the coaching staff are extremely experienced and knowledgeable – I’m hoping that both of these factors will be a massive aid in my development here.

“It’s been a long off-season so it’s been nice to be back in and meet my new teammates. I’m really excited for the pre-season games to begin and for the new season to come around too.”

Hillyerd becomes the Hammers’ sixth summer signing and manager Paul Konchesky is pleased to add another promising youngster to his squad for the upcoming Barclays Women’s Super League season.

“Sophie is somebody we’re looking forward to seeing progress at this football club”, he told whufc.com.  “She’s coming in as the number two to push Mackenzie Arnold – and she will learn a lot from working with an international goalkeeper.

“Sophie has already settled in really well within the group, and I’m excited to see how she progresses with us.”

Everyone at West Ham United would like to welcome Sophie to East London and we wish her every success during her time in Claret & Blue.
