West Ham United v Tottenham Hotspur - All You Need To Know

West Ham United v Tottenham Hotspur
Premier League, London Stadium, Wednesday 31 August 2022, 7.45pm BST

West Ham United versus Tottenham Hotspur is a clash that has always caught the eye - and Wednesday evening’s meeting promises to be no different.

The fixture has rarely disappointed in recent seasons, bringing a fair share of late drama, stunning strikes, and high-scoring matches. After all, who could forget Manuel Lanzini’s dramatic equaliser in 2020/21 or even Michail Antonio’s winner last campaign?

When Spurs visit London Stadium on 31 August, the Hammers will be buoyed on by their first win of the league season which they recorded at Villa Park last Sunday. A deflected Pablo Fornals shot saw the Hammers return to winning ways in the league – and now a London derby is in their sights.

David Moyes’ men have won the last two clashes with Tottenham at London Stadium and will take confidence from their recent wins both in Europe and in the Premier League.

As always when Spurs visit east London, it promises to be another enthralling clash. A London derby under the lights awaits…

Team News

Declan Rice is set for a 200th match for West Ham United, while Michail Antonio could make his 200th Premier League appearance in Claret and Blue.

At his pre-match press conference, David Moyes informed us of the difficulties of the packed schedule and how the Irons squad will have to managed across a busy fixture list.

The boss did not confirm any fresh injury concerns, although Ben Johnson departed the action early at Aston Villa having felt some tightness in his hamstring and will be assessed before Wednesday’s game.

Lucas Paquetá is yet to train with his Hammers teammates so it remains to be seen whether he will be involved on Wednesday.

Opposition

Since Antonio Conte arrived in November 2021, he has started a rebuild at Tottenham Hotspur.

The input of the experienced Italian manager was evident last season, as run of form saw Spurs beat north London rivals Arsenal to the final UEFA Champions League spot.

Conte has been quick to add to the squad he inherited. Yves Bissouma, Ivan Perišić and record signing Richarlison have all joined, while Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski made the trip to north London in the previous window.

The results have started to come now too. Visiting Spurs have picked up ten points from their first four matches in the Premier League – beating Nottingham Forest, Wolves and Southampton, while also battling to a point at Chelsea.

However, they are winless in their last two trips to the London Stadium.

Previous Meetings

West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur have met 52 times in the Premier League, with Spurs winning 25 to the Hammers' 17, while ten matches have been drawn.

The Irons have won the last two matches at London Stadium. Michail Antonio scored the winner last year and was also on the scoresheet alongside Jesse Lingard when the Hammers beat Jose Mourinho’s side behind closed doors due to COVID-19 restrictions in February 2021.

Tottenham did beat West Ham twice last year at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, however. A 3-1 victory in the league saw a Son Heung-min brace and a Kurt Zouma own goal cancel out Saïd Benrahma’s volley, with Spurs also recording a 2-1 win in the Carabao Cup fifth round tie a few months earlier.

Tottenham’s last win at London Stadium came in November 2019 when Harry Kane, Lucas Moura and Son Heung-min all struck for the visitors.

The match also has reputation for a wonderstrike or two. Manuel Lanzini rescued a point with a 30-yard screamer, as the Hammers overturned a three-goal deficit to draw 3-3 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2020.

Lanzini loves to score in this fixture too. He has netted four goals in nine league meetings.
