Ziu impresses as Republic of Ireland conclude World Cup qualifying with victory

Jess Ziu was voted Republic of Ireland’s Player of the Match as they finished off Group A in winning fashion – beating Slovakia in their final outing of qualifying.

Vera Pauw's side did just about enough on the night in a contest that was largely devoid of major action or drama at either end, with Denise O'Sullivan's 38th minute effort enough to separate the two teams.

Ziu was involved in that crucial goal, intercepting the ball in midfield before laying the ball off to O’Sullivan. The eventual goalscorer then swept a ball out to Heather Payne, who pulled a cross back for O’Sullivan to dig out a curling effort that perched itself into the bottom corner.

They now await Friday's World Cup playoff draw to see who they will face in their second-round playoff tie.

Izzy Atkinson was an unused substitute for the Girls in Green.

Brynjarsdottir

Dagný Brynjarsdóttir and Iceland suffered heartbreak in the closing stages of their final World Cup qualifier as they fell to a 1-0 defeat to the Netherlands.

Stelpurnar okkar needed just a point to clinch top spot in Group C to clinch automatic qualification for the 2023 finals.

They looked to have done so as the clock ticked down and into injury time at the end of the second half, but 19-year-old forward, Esmee Brugts would break Icelandic hearts, scoring with 93 minutes on the clock to send the Netherlands through.

Iceland will now have to battle it out in the second round of the play-offs.

Elsewhere, Hawa Cissoko was an unused substitute as France ended their qualifying campaign with a 5-1 vicotry over Greece at Stade Louis Dugauguez in Sedan.

Goals from Grace Geyoro, Melvine Malard, Sandy Baltimore and a brace from Kadidiatou Diani secured the win for France, who finished ten points clear of second placed Wales in Group I.

Away from European competitive action, Mackenzie Arnold was an unused substitute as Australia were beaten 2-1 by Canada at the Allianz Stadium in Sydney.

Mary Fowler of Manchester City put the Matildas in front after only three minutes, before a second half double from former Hammer, Adriana Leon spun the game on its head.
